The global prevalence of latent tuberculosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis

European Respiratory Journal Jun 27, 2019

Cohen A, et al. - Researchers conducted the first study estimating the global prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) based on both interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) and tuberculin skin test (TST) results published between 2005 and 2018 via a systematic review and meta-analysis. They screened 3,280 studies, and of these, 88 studies from 36 countries with 41 IGRA (n=67, 167) and 67 TST estimates (n=284 ,644) were included. As per findings, nearly one-fourth of the world's population has LTBI. This is pertinent in view of the use of both tests, although imperfect, in identifying individuals eligible for preventive therapy. They emphasize the necessity for improved efforts to target the large number of latently infected individuals since they continuously are a huge source of possible active TB.
