The global burden of childhood and adolescent cancer in 2017: An analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017
The Lancet Oncology Aug 04, 2019
Force LM, Abdollahpour I, Advani SM, et al. - Researchers used the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017 methodology to estimate the global burden of childhood cancer in disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs). Childhood cancer resulted in 11.5 million DALYs in 2017, globally. Years of life lost and years lived with disability accounted for 97.3% and 2.7% of these, respectively. Of the leading causes of the total global cancer burden, childhood cancer was ranked sixth. Also, childhood cancer was identified as the ninth leading cause of childhood disease burden globally. In low, low-middle, or middle Socio-demographic Index areas, 82.2% (82.1–82.2) of global childhood cancer DALYs was reported. In these same locations, 50.3% (50.3–50.3) of adult cancer DALYs was reported. Overall, the observed substantial burden of childhood cancer globally deserves attention, as per GBD 2017 results. Also, a disproportionate impact of childhood cancer burden on populations in resource-limited settings was identified. In showing that childhood cancer burden is a crucial global cancer and child health concern, the use of DALY-based estimates is important.
