The function and morphology of Meibomian glands in patients with thyroid eye disease: A preliminary study
BMC Ophthalmology Apr 18, 2018
Wang CY, et al. - Researchers probed the function and morphology of the meibomian gland (MG) in patients with thyroid eye disease (TED). They consecutively enrolled patients with unilateral or bilateral TED. More severe MG dropout (MGd), but thicker lipid layer thickness (LLT) was noted in the patients with active TED. Periglandular inflammation of MGs could be caused by active TED, leading to MGd, but compensatory secretion from residual MGs and lagophthalmos-induced forceful blinking could temporarily release more lipids over the tear film.
