The effects of an aviation-style computerised pre-induction anaesthesia checklist on pre-anaesthetic set-up and non-routine events
Anaesthesia Jun 09, 2019
Jelacic S, et al. - Researchers investigated how the implementation of an aviation-style computerised pre-induction anaesthesia checklist influenced the proportion of cases with missing critical pre-induction items in this prospective, observational study. Prior to and following the implementation of the checklist, 853 and 717 eligible cases were examined, respectively. An attenuation from 10.0% to 6.4% in the proportion of cases with failure to perform all pre-induction steps was evident. In addition, the implementation of checklist resulted in a significant reduction in the proportion of cases with non-routine events, from 1.2% cases before to none post-implementation. With the use of the checklist, the anaesthesia provider was alerted to correct a mistake in pre-induction preparation in 17 cases.
