The effect of heparin infusion intensity on outcomes for bridging hospitalized patients with atrial fibrillation
Clinical Cardiology Sep 12, 2019
Warden BA, et al. - Given the association of perioperative bridging in atrial fibrillation (AF) with low thromboembolic rates but high bleeding rates, researchers investigated if increased bleeding rates are reported in relation to the use of high intensity unfractionated heparin (UFH) infusion regimens vs low intensity regimens for bridging patients with AF. They undertook a single center retrospective cohort study. Participants were admitted patients with non-valvular AF receiving UFH for ≥ 24 hours. This study included 497 patients in total. In 82.1% and in 14.1% of patients, warfarin and direct acting oral anticoagulants were used, respectively. Findings revealed reduced bleeding rates without a signal of increased thromboembolic events in correlation with low intensity UFH infusions, targeting lower anticoagulation targets, in hospitalized AF patients.
