The distance of the femoral neurovascular bundle from the hip joint: An intraoperative guide to reduce iatrogenic injury
Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research Jun 11, 2018
Mehta CR, et al. - Experts evaluated the relationships of the femoral neurovascular bundle to the hip joint to prevent the injury to these structures during primary and revision total hip replacement (THR), which can result in permanent weakness, pain and poor function. The objective relationships between the hip joint and femoral neurovascular bundle that can be used with ease intraoperatively during THR were identified. A higher risk of iatrogenic injury due to increased proximity of the neurovascular structures to the hip could be seen in the patients with a low body weight and the elderly. The risk of iatrogenic injury to these structures could be reduced and improvement in the patient satisfaction and outcomes could be achieved with the application of this knowledge.
