The association of chronic pain and long-term opioid therapy with HIV treatment outcomes
Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes Aug 20, 2018
Merlin JS, et al. - As about 85% of persons living with HIV report chronic pain and are commonly treated with long-term opioid therapy (LTOT), researchers ascertained the impact of chronic pain and LTOT on HIV outcomes. They conducted a prospective cohort study between July 2015 and July 2016 in 5 HIV primary care clinics. Findings suggest a virologic failure in association with chronic pain among participants not on LTOT. Patients with pain showed an apparent protective association between LTOT and virologic failure. This highlights the necessity for effective chronic pain treatments for persons living with HIV and investigating their impact on HIV outcomes.
