The association between keratoconus and body mass index: A population-based cross-sectional study among half a million adolescents
American Journal of Ophthalmology Dec 13, 2020
Eliasi E, Bez M, Megreli J, et al. - In this cross sectional study, researchers intended to determine if there is an association between keratoconus and body-mass index (BMI) among adolescents. The sample consisted of 579,946 males and females aged 16-19.9 years. Study participants were divided into four groups based on adjusted BMI percentiles: underweight (8.3%), normal weight (73.9%), overweight (10.7%) and obese (7.1%). This research offers powerful proof of the independent association between keratoconus and BMI. Compared with normal weight, overweight and obese adolescents have higher chances of having keratoconus. As a risk factor for keratoconus, BMI should be considered and more studies should explain how obesity is involved in the development of keratoconus.
