The association between hyperuricemia and coronary artery calcification development: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Clinical Cardiology Oct 10, 2019
Liang L, Hou X, Bainey KR, et al. - Via this meta-analysis, researchers explored the link between serum uric acid (SUA) and coronary artery calcification (CAC) in adults. They included 11 observational studies with 11,108 adults, identified from MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and EBSCO (CINAHL). These studies described data on CAC presence (Agatston score > 0) or progression associated with hyperuricemia in subclinical adult patients. Under the minimal threshold of hyperuricemia (more than 6 mg/dL or 357 μmoL/L), 1.806-fold risk for developing CAC in patients in the high SUA group was revealed by the pooled OR based on the frequency of CAC presence. For CAC presence, the pooled estimate of adjusted ORs was 1.48 on analyzing SUA levels as categorical variables. With an average follow-up from 4.6 to 6.1 years, a rise in the risk of CAC progression by 31% was reported in relation to each increase of 1 mg/dL of SUA level. Findings revealed a close link of hyperuricemia with a raised risk of CAC development and CAC progression in asymptomatic patients.
