BMC Pulmonary Medicine Oct 25, 2019
Osei AD, Mirbolouk M, Orimoloye OA, et al. - Given the potential pulmonary health influences of sole e-cigarette use represent a public health concern, researchers investigated the link between e-cigarette use and asthma among never combustible cigarette smokers, by pooling 2016 and 2017 data of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. This study included 402,822 never combustible cigarette smokers, including 3,103 (0.8%) current e-cigarette users and 34,074 (8.5%) with asthma. Current e-cigarette users had a median age of 18–24 years. A rise in the odds ratio of self-reported asthma from 1.31 in occasional users to 1.73 in daily e-cigarette users was noted, vs never e-cigarette users. They found increased odds of asthma among never combustible smoking e-cigarette users–a finding possibly having potential public health implications.
