Th2 CD4+ T cells are necessary and sufficient for Schistosoma-pulmonary hypertension

Journal of the American Heart Association Jul 31, 2019

Kumar R, Mickael C, Kassa B, et al. - Researchers intended to define the role of CD4+ T cells in schistosomiasis-associated pulmonary hypertension (PH) using a mouse model. They found that as a result of embolization of Schistosoma eggs into lungs of egg-sensitized mice, perivascular density of T-helper 2 (Th2) CD4+ T cells increased via recruitment of cells from the circulation and type 2 inflammation was induced. The need for egg embolization for localized type 2 immunity was corroborated by parabiosis. Overall, findings revealed the necessity as well as the adequacy of Th2 CD4+ T cells as a component for the type 2 inflammation-induced PH after Schistosoma exposure.
