Systolic blood pressure and outcomes in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction
Journal of the American College of Cardiology Jun 21, 2019
Arundel C, et al. - Using the Medicare-linked OPTIMIZE-HF registry, researchers examined patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) to determine how systolic blood pressure (SBP) <130 mm Hg impacts outcomes in these subjects. Of 25,345 patients registered, an ejection fraction ≤40% was present in 10,535. Of these, a stable SBP (≤20 mm Hg admission to discharge variation) and a discharge SBP <130 mm Hg was present in 5,615 and in 3,805 (68%), respectively. Poor outcomes were reported in relation to SBP <130 mm Hg among hospitalized older patients with HFrEF. The persistence of this link was evident in repeated analyses conducted following the exclusion of patients with SBP <110 mm Hg.
