Systemic cytokines are elevated in a subset of patients with irritable bowel syndrome but largely unrelated to symptom characteristics
Neurogastroenterology & Motility Jun 09, 2018
Bennet SMP, et al. - Researchers explored systemic cytokine levels in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients and healthy subjects (HS), confirm the presence of a subset of patients with an increased immune activity as well as established whether cytokines were linked to IBS symptoms and pathophysiological factors. It was observed in the findings that compared to HS, serum cytokines were elevated in IBS patients. Data reported that immune activation identified a subset of patients, however modest correlations between cytokine profile and symptoms suggest immune activity did not directly influence symptoms in IBS.
