Systematic review with meta-analysis: Association of vitamin D status with clinical outcomes in adult patients with inflammatory bowel disease

Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics Oct 29, 2019

Gubatan J, et al. - In this systematic review and meta-analysis involving 8,316 inflammatory bowel disease (IBD; a chronic, inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract) patients (3,115 ulcerative colitis, 5,201 Crohn disease), researchers explored the connection between low vitamin D status and clinical outcomes. Findings suggested an association of low 25(OH)D status with increased odds of disease activity, mucosal inflammation, low quality of life (QOL) scores and future clinical relapse among IBD patients. Low vitamin D status was related to Crohn disease activity, mucosal inflammation, clinical relapse, and low QOL scores and ulcerative colitis disease activity and clinical relapse in subgroup analysis. In patients with IBD, low 25(OH)D status is a biomarker for disease activity and predictor of poor clinical results.
