Systematic review on respiratory syncytial virus epidemiology in adults and the elderly in Latin America
International Journal of Infectious Diseases Dec 19, 2019
Ali A, et al. - In this systematic literature search, researchers sought for studies (n = 18) concentrated on RSV prevalence, burden, risk factors, and the usual clinical practice in the prevention and administration of RSV infections in Latin American countries in order to summarize the recently published data on RSV epidemiology. They identified scarcity of recent RSV data concerning adult populations from Latin America. They included 18 studies in this work. Included studies varied highly in percentages of RSV detection for adult individuals with respiratory infections (0% to 77.9%), influenza-like illness (1.0% to 16.4%) and community-acquired pneumonia (1.3% to 13.5%). They identified reporting of considerable percentages of hospitalization for RSV-infected adults with influenza-like illness (40.9% and 69.9%) and community-acquired pneumonia (91.7%). Studies thereby state that in Latin America, RSV infections could be a notable cause of hospitalization in adult populations including younger adults.
