Survival following a concomitant aortic valve procedure during left ventricular assist device surgery: An ISHLT Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support (IMACS) registry analysis

European Journal of Heart Failure Nov 26, 2020

Veenis JF, Yalcin YC, Brugts JJ, et al. - Researchers compared early‐ as well as late‐term survival and reasons for mortality between patients with and without a concomitant aortic valve (AoV) procedure during continuous‐flow left ventricular assist device (LVAD) surgery. The International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support (IMACS) Registry was used to identify adult primary continuous‐flow LVAD patients. Early (≤ 90 days) survival after LVAD surgery was the primary outcome. Significantly decreased late survival was observed in patients who received concomitant AoV replacement vs patients with AoV repair or without an AoV procedure. In patients receiving LVAD implantation, concomitant AoV surgery was identified as an independent predictor of death. To ascertain the best AoV surgical strategy at the time of LVAD surgery, there is a requirement for additional research.
