Survival disparities by race and ethnicity in early esophageal cancer
Digestive Diseases and Sciences Aug 17, 2018
Tramontano AC, et al. - Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)-Medicare linked database, researchers ascertained if survival differences among racial/ethnic patient populations endure after adjusting for demographic and clinical characteristics. They analyzed data of T1-3N0M0 adenocarcinoma and squamous cell cancer patients diagnosed between 2003 and 2011. Significant predictors in the full adjusted model were surgery, chemotherapy, younger age, lower T stage, and lower Charlson comorbidity score. They found that differences in mortality risk by race/ethnicity seem to be largely explained by additional factors. Specifically, affiliations were found in surgery and T stage.
