Survival and risk of recurrence of takotsubo syndrome
Heart Jan 13, 2021
Lau C, Chiu S, Nayak R, et al. - By performing this retrospective population-based cohort study, researchers examined the long-term results of cases with takotsubo syndrome and also explored factors related to death or recurrence. Between 2006 and 2016, takotsubo syndrome was confirmed to be present in 519 patients in an integrated health system in Southern California. A follow-up of 5.2 years (IQR 3.0–7.2) was conducted among patients, during which, recurrent takotsubo syndrome was detected in 39 (7.5%) and deaths of 84 (16.2%) were reported. In multivariate modelling, age, male gender, diabetes, pulmonary disease and chronic kidney disease were identified as factors related to higher risk of recurrence or death. Overall, the occurrence of recurrent takotsubo syndrome in a minor subset of patients was noted. Higher event-free survival in correlation with treatment with beta-blocker was reported.
