Surgical outcomes in eyes with extremely high myopia for macular hole without retinal detachment
Retina Sep 28, 2018
Wu TT, et al. - In eyes with extremely high myopia, authors assessed the surgical outcomes for macular hole (MH) without retinal detachment. Researchers studied 14 eyes with axial lengths of ≥30.0 mm that underwent vitrectomy and internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling with or without inverted ILM flap insertion for MH without retinal detachment. Anatomical and functional improvements were obtained with MH surgery in patients with extremely high myopia. In MH closure, significantly higher primary success rates were achieved with inverted ILM flap insertion. MH-associated retinal detachment developed in only 1 eye 4.5 years after previously failed MH surgery. After a second operation, reattachment was achieved. They noted 85.7% (12/14 eyes) as the overall final closure rate; 17.29 (±20.20) months was the mean follow-up.
