Surgical management of multiple rib fractures reduces the hospital length of stay and the mortality rate in major trauma patients: A comparative study in a UK major trauma center
Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma Dec 22, 2018
Gerakopoulos E, et al. - Authors analyzed 83 cases between August 2012 and March 2015 to evaluate the effectiveness of surgical fixation of rib fractures in complex traumatic chest injuries in comparison with traditional nonoperative management in North West England. They observed the low incidences of respiratory complexities in cases with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with a low mortality rate (2.1%) as compared to 13.9% for the conservative group indicating a reduction in total hospital length of stay (LOS) and decreased incidence of intensive care unit (ICU) admission.
