Supine flexibility predicts curve progression for patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis undergoing underarm bracing
The Bone & Joint Journal Feb 10, 2020
Cheung JPY, et al. - This study was intended to evaluate whether supine flexibility predicts the likelihood of curve progression in individuals with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) undergoing brace treatment. Researchers conducted a retrospective analysis of individuals with AIS prescribed with an underarm brace between September 2008 to April 2013 and followed up until 18 years of age or required surgery. The study enrolled a sum of 586 individuals with a mean age of 12.6 years (SD 1.2) that remained for analysis after exclusion. It was noted that supine radiographs give a satisfactory prognostication for in-brace correction and post-bracing curve magnitude. The results suggested that the flexibility of the curve is a guide to ascertain the likelihood of brace success.
