Substantial cardiovascular morbidity in adults with lower-complexity congenital heart disease

Circulation Mar 07, 2019

Saha P, et al. - In 2,006 individuals with lower-complexity adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) listed in the UK Biobank (UKB), researchers estimated the associated risk of adverse cardiovascular events that remained unmeasured by conventional risk factors. A total of 497,983 individuals without ACHD were also included. Fatal or non-fatal acute coronary syndrome, ischemic stroke, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation all were considered as primary endpoints. They also assessed a secondary combined endpoint for major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE). According to the findings, a higher burden of adverse cardiovascular events was observed in individuals with lower-complexity ACHD vs that seen in the general population. This burden was not attributable to conventional cardiovascular risk factors. Closer surveillance is required in patients with mild to moderate ACHD.
