Subsequent mortality in survivors of Ebola virus disease in Guinea: A nationwide retrospective cohort study

The Lancet Infectious Diseases Oct 28, 2019

Keita M, Diallo B, Mesfin S, et al. - Researchers sought to determine subsequent mortality among people discharged from Ebola treatment units via following-up 1,130 of 1,270 (89%) survivors of Ebola virus disease who were discharged from Ebola treatment units from Dec 8, 2015, in Surveillance Active en ceinture, the Guinean national survivors' monitoring program. Compared with the general Guinean population, a more than five-times higher risk of mortality was recorded for survivors of Ebola virus disease up to Dec 31, 2015, during a mean of 1 year of follow-up after discharge. They observed an increased risk of death among survivors who were hospitalized for longer during primary infection. This information may aid in conducting current and future survivors' programs and in the prioritization of funds in resource-constrained settings.
