Subcutaneous, but not visceral, adipose tissue as a marker for prognosis in gastric cancer patients with cachexia

Clinical Nutrition Aug 22, 2021

Han J, Tang M, Lu C, et al. - Poor survival was seen in gastric cancer patients with cachexia who exhibited low SATI [(index of subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT)] vs those with high SATI, thus, loss of SAT during the progress of cancer cachexia deserves more attention. There exist different impacts of SAT and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) on gastric cancer patients with cachexia.

  • A total of 1627 gastric cancer patients who had surgery (411 cachexia and 1216 non-cachexia) were included.

  • A new deep learning system was constructed to segment SAT and VAT from the computed tomography images at the third lumbar vertebra.

  • Significantly lower SATI was detected in gastric cancer patients with cachexia vs non-cachexia patients (44.91 ± 0.90 vs 50.92 ± 0.71 cm 2 /m 2 ), whereas there was no significant difference in VATI (index of VAT).

  • No close correlation of VATI with survival of cachexia patients was found.
