Stratified survival of resected and overall pancreatic cancer patients in Europe and the USA in the early twenty-first century: A large, international population-based study
BMC Medicine Aug 26, 2018
Huang L, et al. - In this international population-based study, researchers presented tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) stage- and age-specific survival estimates and trends in resected and overall (resected and unresected) pancreatic cancer (PaC) in Europe and the US in the early twenty-first century. Findings suggested that the TNM stage- and age-stratified survival results might be important for clinical counseling. This investigation provided comprehensive data on survival expectations of resected PaC patients, which were substantially higher than the widely available and known gloomy survival forecast for total patients. From this observational study, the benefits of resection cannot be concluded. Before treatment, patients with advanced-stage disease and/or older age should undergo the careful risk assessment. Limited but inspiring improvement in survival was noted.
