Spinal injuries in airborne accidents: A demographic overview of 148 patients in a level-1 trauma center
European Spine Journal Mar 22, 2019
Backer HC, et al. - A sum of 235 individuals were quantified to delineate the type and severity of spinal injury in airborne sports from 2010 to 2017 at a level-1 trauma center in Switzerland. They classified the injuries using the newest AOSpine classification, ASIA-grading and the injury severity score (ISS). They observed the necessity of spine surgery in 78 cases due to instability or neurological deficiencies (20.9%). They found an increase in the age of subjects and the severity of injuries (ISS) when compared with the literature due to the increasing popularity of airborne sports. Principally, they noted the thoracolumbar spine at high risk.
