Specific airway resistance is a better outcome parameter in bronchial provocation testing compared to FEV1 in patients with bronchial asthma
Journal of Asthma Mar 01, 2019
Van Nederveen-Bendien SA, et al. - Given that asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), researchers conducted this study to provide insight in the usefulness of specific airway resistance (sRaw) as an outcome parameter in bronchial provocation test (BPT). The study included a total of 85 patients with BPT. According to findings, 29 patients (34%) exhibited a significant increase in sRaw without a fall in forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1). Since the performance of sRaw is not a routine investigation, these patients are at risk of being excluded from asthma diagnosis. Investigators suggest that patients who report recognizable symptoms should perform sRaw without a fall in FEV1 during BPT.
