Solar maculopathy: Prognosis over one year follow up

Abdellah MM, et al. - In this prospective, observational case series, researchers documented the visual acuity, spectral domain optical coherence tomography findings and prognosis in 10 eyes of 6 individuals with foveal damage from solar retinopathy in 1 year. The study sample consisted of patients presented by solar maculopathy at Ophthalmology department, Sohag University. Data reported that patients' mean age was 16.5 years (range 9 to 27 years of age). The affected eyes' visual acuity ranged from 0.4 to 0.9 at presentation. Solar maculopathy occurs due to direct exposure to sun rays, causing a visual acuity diminution with a good prognosis, but after 6 months it shows no improvement. As a risk factor, young age could pose.
