Socioeconomic inequality and risk of sarcopenia in community-dwelling older adults
Clinical Interventions in Aging Jun 21, 2021
Swan L, et al. - By conducting this cross-sectional analysis, researchers investigated prevalence of probable sarcopenia, a precursor to sarcopenia diagnosis, on the basis of the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 guidelines overall, and according to socioeconomic position (SEP). Participants were a total of 3342 community-dwelling older adults [mean age (SD) 68.9 ± 6.3 years] from Wave 1 of the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing. Presence of probable sarcopenia was found in 23.4% of the population, and was significantly higher in the subset with low than high SEP. In this population of community-dwelling older adults, disadvantaged SEP was revealed as an independent determinant of probable sarcopenia. In the light of findings, consideration should be given to SEP and health inequality in the prevention and treatment policy for sarcopenia in the community.
