Socioeconomic disparity in mortality risks widened across generations during rapid economic development in Hong Kong: An age-period-cohort analysis from 1976 to 2010
Annals of Epidemiology Jun 18, 2018
Chung RY, et al. - In view of the observation that Hong Kong has been one of the fastest growing post-war economies with substantial decline in mortality risks during the past decades, researchers examined if there is a socioeconomic disparity in the trends of mortality risks across generations. Both sexes showed a decline in age-standardized mortality rates; higher rates were generally observed in those of lower socioeconomic status (SES). The emergence of greater mortality risks for people of lower SES was observed since the cohorts born in 1930s-1940s. Till recent cohorts, socioeconomic disparity of mortality risks continued to widen. People of higher SES showed greater health benefits brought by rapid economic development. thus they recommended paying more attention to post-war baby-boomers of lower SES.
