Small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) in patients with corneal guttae

Clinical Ophthalmology Aug 27, 2020

Kim BK, et al. - In this retrospective analysis, researchers reported 12-month outcomes of small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) in the treatment of myopia with corneal guttae (CG). Participants in the study were six patients (12 eyes) who had preoperative CG without a clinical sign of Fuchs’ endothelial corneal dystrophy and had SMILE for correction of myopia. The mean spherical equivalent for 12 months postoperatively was − 0.10 ± 0.32 D and all eyes had a UDVA of 0 logMAR or better. During the follow-up period, no eyes developed corneal edema or other complication. According to findings, SMILE produced visual acuity improvement and no adverse effects to corneal endothelial cells were observed to correct myopia or myopic astigmatism in CG patients. However, studies involving a greater number of patients and longer follow-up periods are required to evaluate the long-term outcomes and safety.
