Six-month outcomes for COVID-19 negative patients with acute myocardial infarction before vs during the COVID-19 pandemic

The American Journal of Cardiology Feb 26, 2021

Aldujeli A, Hamadeh A, Tecson KM, et al. - Researchers here compared patients presenting with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) during the pandemic with those presenting prior to it with respect to their characteristics, clinical course, and outcomes. In this multicenter, retrospective cohort study, COVID-19 negative patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in Lithuania from March 11, 2020 to April 20, 2020 were compared with patients admitted with the same diagnosis during the same period in 2019. Of 269 included patients, 107 (40.8%) were those presenting during the pandemic. Findings revealed that during the COVID-19 pandemic, 34% fewer patients with AMI presented to the hospital, and those who did waited longer to present and experienced more 6-month major adverse cardiovascular events compared with patients admitted prior to the pandemic.
