Single-dose perioperative antibiotics do not increase the risk of surgical site infection in unicompartmental knee arthroplasty

Journal of Arthroplasty Mar 28, 2019

Wyles CC, et al. - From 2007 to 2017, investigators estimated a large range of unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) conducted with single-dose vs 24-hour intravenous (IV) antibiotic coverage to ascertain the influence of single-dose perioperative antibiotic administration on the risk for surgical site infection (SSI). They categorized 296 UKAs as 40 were outpatient procedures experiencing single-dose antibiotics whereas 256 were inpatient procedures receiving 24-hour antibiotics. They observed the occurrence of SSI in 2 of 296 cases, 2 of 256 inpatients UKAs (0.8%), and none of the outpatient UKAs (0%). They found 1 deep infection 6 weeks postoperatively requiring 2-stage exchange and conversion to total knee arthroplasty. They also found a superficial infection treated with 2 weeks of oral antibiotics. They overall demonstrated a low SSI risk (0.8%) following UKA with both single-dose as well as 24-hour IV antibiotics.
