Silicone oil tamponade effect on macular layer thickness and visual acuity

Rabina G, Azem N, Barequet D, et al. - This study was sought to assess the affect of silicone oil (SO) tamponade on retinal layers thickness and visual acuity in patients who underwent pars plana vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. A retrospective case series was designed to include consecutive patients who had undergone pars plana vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment with SO tamponade. Researchers assessed visual acuity and central macular thickness with SO and at least a month after SO removal (SOR). They excluded patients with insufficient or poor-quality images or macular pathologies such as macular edema or epiretinal membranes. This research enrolled a total of 41 patients with an average age of 56.1 ± 15.2 years. The results suggest that in central macular thickness, silicone oil tamponade causes a transient decrease, mainly in the inner layers. It was noted that central macular thickness resembles to the fellow eyes after SOR. The mechanism for this impact is unclear, but apparently has no affect on final visual acuity.
