Silent brain infarcts following cardiac procedures: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Journal of the American Heart Association Apr 30, 2019
Indja B, et al. - Researchers focused on silent brain infarcts (SBIs) and focal neurologic deficits following cardiac procedures in this analysis of 42 relevant studies with 49 separate intervention groups, involving 2632 patients. The reported SBI prevalence post- cardiac procedures were 0.71 after transcatheter aortic valve implantation, 0.44 after aortic valve replacement, 0.39 in a mixed cardiothoracic surgery group, 0.25 post-coronary artery bypass graft, 0.14 post-percutaneous coronary intervention, and 0.14 following off-pump coronary artery bypass. Overall, a very common prevalence of SBIs complicating cardiac procedures, especially those involving the aortic valve, was reported. Findings revealed a high frequency of SBIs vs strokes, which highlights the significance of recording this surrogate measure in cardiac interventional studies.
