Significance of exercise‐related ventricular arrhythmias in patients with Brugada syndrome

Journal of the American Heart Association Dec 06, 2020

Morita H, Asada ST, Miyamoto M, et al. - Researchers investigated whether exercise‐related premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) have significance for predicting development of ventricular fibrillation (VF) in patients with Brugada syndrome. This study involved 307 patients with Brugada syndrome who performed a treadmill exercise test. At rest, during exercise and at the peak of exercise, as well as during recovery post-exercise (0–5 minutes), the occurrence of PVCs was assessed. A follow-up of 92 ± 68 months was performed and the occurrence of VF was assessed. Findings demonstrated a correlation between PVCs early after an exercise test and future occurrence of VF events. In high‐risk patients with Brugada syndrome, ST‐segment augmentation and PVCs would be promoted by rebound of vagal nerve activity at the early recovery phase.
