Short-term morbidity and mortality after hemiarthroplasty and total hip arthroplasty for pathologic proximal femur fractures
Journal of Arthroplasty Jun 20, 2019
Varady NH, et al. - Via the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database for patients with pathologic proximal femur fractures (PPFFs) treated with hemiarthroplasty (HA) or total hip arthroplasty (THA), the contributors targeted to compare short-term morbidity and mortality of HA vs THA. As compared to THA, older age, dependent functional status, and the presence of disseminated cancer were predictive of undergoing HA. The increasing importance of the durability of surgical reconstruction to treat PPFFs was concluded as metastatic cancer patients continue to live longer with their disease. No significant differences in 30-day complications between PPFF patients treated with THA or HA after controlling for underlying confounders were exhibited. Utilization of THA to treat certain patients with PPFFs could be considered and to examine long-term functional outcomes, future work is warranted.
