Sex differences in the prevalence and adverse outcomes of sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity in community dwelling elderly in East China using the AWGS criteria
BMC Endocrine Disorders Oct 30, 2019
Du Y, Wang X, Xie H, et al. - In this cross-sectional study involving 213 males and 418 females aged > 65 years, researchers ascertained if there were sex differences in the prevalence and adverse outcomes of sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity (SO) in community-dwelling elderly people in East China. Using the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) criteria, sarcopenia and SO were diagnosed. Data reported that sarcopenia's prevalence was 19.2% in males and 8.6% in females and SO's prevalence was 7.0% in males and 2.4% in females. Using the AWGS criteria, males were more likely to be sarcopenic and to have SO than females. SO females were more likely to have increased blood glucose, while SO males were more likely to have osteoporosis and dyslipidemia.
