Sex difference in meningococcal disease mortality, New York City, 2008–2016
Clinical Infectious Diseases Aug 20, 2018
Bloch D, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study of 151 persons aged ≥ 15 years diagnosed with invasive meningococcal disease (IMD), researchers examined demographic, clinical, and community-level factors linked with death to confirm the higher mortality risk among female IMD patients, after adjusting for confounders, and to assess factors linked to female IMD mortality. Outcomes suggested a significantly increased mortality from IMD among females vs males, after controlling for other predictors of mortality. Routine surveillance data is thus significant for identifying and addressing disparities in disease incidence and outcomes.
