Serum beta-carotene and overall and cause-specific mortality: A prospective cohort study
Circulation Research Dec 02, 2018
Huang J, et al. - In this prospective serologic analysis of 29,103 men in the Alpha-Tocopherol, Beta-Carotene Cancer Prevention (ATBC) Study, researchers investigated the association of serum beta-carotene with overall and cause-specific mortality, as well as the strength and dose-response of the association. According to findings, a higher beta-carotene biochemical status was related to lower overall, cardiovascular disease (CVD), heart disease, stroke, cancer, and other causes of mortality. On adjusting for other important risk factors, no reduction was seen in the dose-response associations over a 30-year period, these associations encouraged greater fruit and vegetable consumption as a means to increase beta-carotene status and promote longevity.
