Seroprevalence of hepatitis B virus: Findings from a population-based household survey in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
International Journal of Infectious Diseases Aug 07, 2019
Samsunder N, Ngcapu S, Lewis S, et al. - In view of the morbidity and mortality caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, researchers evaluated the prevalence and distribution of HBV in 9,791 participants (15–49 years old) registered for a household survey in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The participants showed an overall HBV virus surface antigen (HBsAg) prevalence of 4.0%, with 4.8% in men and 3.2% in women. An important measure of sustained transmission was the presence of HBV nucleocapsid antigen. Among HIV-positive participants vs HIV-negative participants, HBsAg prevalence of 6.4% vs 2.6% was observed, respectively. Findings support undertaking scale-up of immunization and treatment to diminish the spread of HBV.
