BMC Infectious Diseases May 12, 2019
Huai P, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, researchers analyzed a total of 7,256 sexually-active participants, 18–49 years of age, for seroprevalence of herpes simplex virus type-2 (HSV-2). In addition, associated factors and information for design of HSV-2 control strategy in Shandong, China were assessed. Females displayed a weighted seroprevalence of HSV-2 infection of 4.2%, which was noted to be significantly higher than that noted for males (2.7%). This suggests that Shandong province, China, had a relatively low burden of HSV-2 vs the seroprevalence reported in many other provinces and countries. Among men, HSV-2 infection was noted to be associated with being urban residents, having two or more sex partners in the past year, and having commercial sex. HSV-2 infection was associated with factors including being divorced or widowed, having a tattoo, and being dissatisfied with the sex activity quality among females.
