Sero-epidemiological status and risk factors of toxoplasmosis in pregnant women in Northern Vietnam
BMC Infectious Diseases Apr 24, 2019
Smit GSA, et al. - In pregnant women in Northern Vietnam, researchers assessed the seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis and any links with awareness, risk factors and congenital toxoplasmosis. From one in hospital in Hanoi and one in Thai Binh province around 800 pregnant women were involved in this study. Following the full diagnostic process the mean IgG seroprevalence was 4.5% and 5.8% in Hanoi and Thai Binh hospital, respectively; this includes one seroconversion diagnosed in Thai Binh hospital. The percentage of participants who had heard about toxoplasmosis before this study was 2.0% and 3.3% of the pregnant women in Hanoi hospital and Thai Binh hospital, respectively. Information about toxoplasmosis and and how to prevent it should be distributed among women of child bearing age, in light of the high percentage of seronegative (and succeptable) pregnant women and low awareness. Resaons for such a low seroprevalence in pregnant women in Northern Vietnam vs other countries in South East Asia and globally should be studied in the future.
