Sedentary time and peripheral artery disease: The Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos
American Heart Journal Feb 16, 2020
Unkart JT, Allison MA, Parada H, et al. - In this inquiry undertaken among 7,609 Hispanic/Latinos (ages 45–74) from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos, researchers focused on objectively-measured sedentary time (ST) and lower extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD) given a possible contribution of ST to cardiovascular disease has been suggested by experimental evidence. Using the ankle brachial index (ABI ≤ 0.9), they determined PAD. Accelerometry was performed to measure ST. The reported median ST was 12.2 hours/day, and PAD was present in 5.4% of people. Findings revealed higher odds of PAD in relation to ST in this study population of Hispanic/Latino adults, this finding was independent of leg pain, moderate-vigorous intensity physical activity, and traditional PAD risk factors. Experts reported a threshold effect such that these links were only evident at the highest levels of ST.
