Screening for latent tuberculosis in patients with inflammatory bowel disease under antitumor necrosis factor: Data from a Portuguese center
European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology Aug 14, 2019
Sousa M, Ladeira I, Ponte A, et al. - In patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) treated with anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) agents, researchers assessed the prevalence of latent tuberculosis (TB) infection (LTBI) and the number of active tuberculosis cases. This was a retrospective study from a Portuguese center involving 117 IBD patients (mean age was 40 years) who began therapy with anti-TNF between 2013 and 2017. Investigators found that the prevalence of LTBI before starting anti-TNF treatment was significant in this sample of patients with IBD (32%), but only one patient had active TB after treatment with LTBI. There was no active TB in any of the patients with negative LTBI screening.
