Screening for hepatitis C in a general adult population in a low-prevalence area: The Tromsø study
BMC Infectious Diseases Mar 02, 2019
Kileng H, et al. - Researchers sought to determine hepatitis C virus (HCV) prevalence in the general adult population of the municipality of Tromsø, Norway. Further, they assessed the effectiveness of an approach that screens healthy individuals in a presumed low-prevalence area. They analyzed sera from 20,946 individuals aged 40 years and older for antibodies to HCV (anti-HCV) in this study which was part of the seventh survey of the Tromsø Study (Tromsø 7) in 2015–2016. Findings revealed HCV RNA in 33 (0.2%) participants, of whom 13 (39.4%) were not aware of their infection. These findings suggest that awareness regarding infectious status is lacking in a substantial proportion of persons with the disease. This suggests the inadequacy of the current screening strategy of individuals with high risk of infection to identify chronic HCV infection hidden in the general population.
