Screening for atrial fibrillation using economical and accurate technology (from the SAFETY study)
American Journal of Cardiology Jul 26, 2018
Lown M, et al. - Whether inexpensive, wearable, consumer ECG sensing devices (Polar-H7 and Firstbeat Bodyguard 2) accurately detect atrial fibrillation (AF) was investigated in the SAFETY trial. Researchers performed a case-control study including 413 participants aged > 65 (79 with AF/Flutter at the study visit and 336 without) attending three general practice surgeries in Hampshire, UK for a single screening visit. An accurate detection of AF was attained with these consumer heart rate monitoring devices, with sensitivity and specificity > 95%. Compared to WatchBP and AliveCor, the consumer devices performed as well or even better, and had the capability to store or transmit ECG data, which could be used to confirm AF.
