Schizophrenia is associated with an increased risk of sexually transmitted infections: A nationwide population-based cohort study in Taiwan
Schizophrenia Research Jun 29, 2018
Chen SF, et al. - The association between schizophrenia (SCZ) and the subsequent incident sexually transmitted infections (STI) was investigated. In addition, researchers assessed the potential risk factors. Analyzing 58,948 SCZ patients and 235,784 controls matched by gender and age from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan between 2000 and 2010, they noted an increased risk of developing STI in association with SCZ. This has direct implications for the development of targeted prevention interventions or regular sexual health screening in mental health clinics to reduce the disproportionate burden of HIV and other STI in SCZ patients.
