Sarcopenia is predictive of 1-year mortality after acetabular fractures in elderly patients
Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma Jun 07, 2018
Mitchell PM, et al. - Authors ascertained if sarcopenia is an independent predictor of mortality in geriatric acetabular fractures. To assess for sarcopenia, psoas:lumbar vertebral index (PLVI), calculated using the cross-sectional area of the L4 vertebral body and the left and right psoas muscles were used. In elderly patients with acetabular fractures, sarcopenia was an independent risk factor. Findings suggested that objective measures were important to evaluate the frailty in elderly patients who sustained fractures about the hip and pelvis.
