Sarcopenia and type 2 diabetes mellitus as predictors of 2-year mortality after hospital discharge in a cohort of hospitalized older adults
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Dec 06, 2019
Beretta MV, et al. – Researchers compared older patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) with controls without diabetes to investigate the coexistence of sarcopenia and type 2 T2D, and determine whether this potential link predicts mortality 2 years post-hospital discharge. The sample consisted of patients hospitalized between July 2015 and December 2017. Of the 610 patients included, 306 (51%) had T2D (46.3% sarcopenic). Among those with T2D, the mortality rate was 28%. After adjustment, the coexistence of T2D and sarcopenia was independently linked to mortality after hospital discharge. Overall, older patients with T2D and sarcopenia had a higher mortality risk after discharge from the hospital compared with controls.
